Pumping in fresh water post tsunami

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Society will pump in some US$ 30 mn over two years to set up water treatment and distribution systems in tsunami affected area. Making up phase three and the long-term strategy of a post tsunami water and sanitation project will build water treatment and distribution infrastructure in Jaffna, Ampara, Matara and Galle.

The Red Cross will sign an MOU later in August with the National Water Supply and Drainage Board initiating the project, which will be later handed over to the board for running and maintenance.

Currently the international volunteer group is working in the southern and eastern coastal areas, treating and pumping out some 140 cubic meters of water daily to over 100,000 people in the region.

The project began in the immediate aftermath of the tsunami and is still in some places the only source of drinking water.
