The Railway Department will begin overhauling 100 km of the islands dilapidated rail track this month at a cost of over Rs 374 mn.

Work will begin in mid September,” a senior official at the Railway Department said.
Over the next three months the Department will target 100km of rail track in such poor condition that the trains have to travel at below 10 miles per hour.
On average the local trains travel at around 30 miles per hour. The upcountry track will get priority attention for safety reasons.
The government approved a short-term plan for urgent track improvement of identified areas in July, to push the average speed up to a respectable 45 miles per hour.
“We will target 100 km of track where the train goes below 10 miles per hour and other weak areas to bring the average speed to around 45 km per hour,” the official said.
