, UNP bigwigs stepped out of their luxury vehicles, and into autorickshaws to show off their 'commoness', and cause a huge traffic jam in Fort at rush hours.

"The government must subsidise petrol. If it doesn’t have the funds, it should resign and give the governance of the country to the UNP who can manage it better than this," said Opposition MP John Amaratunga, speaking at the protest.

Three-wheeler drivers took up the chant, with one querying, "Why can't the government give us a certain number of litres per day at a concessionary price? Like five litres a day at Rs. 50 per litre?"

The recent price hike in fuel was only one of a host of complaints of the three-wheeler drivers.
