Government aid package for families that lost their homes

The government is doling out up to US$ 500 each for 40,000 families whose homes were completely destroyed by the tsunami.





The government is doling out up to US$ 500 each for 40,000 families whose homes were completely destroyed by the tsunami. The government proposes to allocate US$ 200 and a cash advancement of US$ 300 per family for houses that were fully damaged by the tsunami, said a report from the Centre for National Operations (CNO) on Wednesday.

The CNO estimates that around 40,000 families will need this government stipend.

Besides this, around 25,000 families whose homes were partially destroyed will pick up US$ 200 to relocate or rebuild on crown land.

The government is now in the process of moving displaced families to temporary shelters before building permanent homes for them.

"We have sent out a flash appeal through the UN for tents that can be used as temporary shelters," said Dr Tara de Mel who is heading the Task force for rescue and relief, at a press conference on Wednesday.

The government says that lands have also been identified in most tsunami affected districts, to resettle
