Sri Lanka on Tuesday picked up a Rs. 80 million (JP¥ 90 million) grant to draw up plans to renovate the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, the finance ministry said. The hospital's activities and infrastructure had deteriorated due to two decades of fighting between the government and the Tamil Tiger rebels for an independent homeland.

A Norwegian-backed truce kicked in from February 2002, but ceasefire monitors reported that over 190 people had been killed this year in ethnic violence.

Detail drawings on the hospital will be completed by March 2006, and the Japanese government – currently Sri Lanka's largest aid donor – is expected to chip in with another grant to construct the hospital, the statement said.

The four-storied 6,870 square mile building, will house a new theatre complex including intensive care units and central supply and sterlisation dept., neurology unit and a cardiology unit.

(US$ 1 = Rs. 101.9)
