They must pay up before December 31,” said VAT Commissioner of Inland Revenue, A A Wijepala, on Friday.

The GST payments are back on the balance sheet after the government amended the amnesty law removing indirect taxes from amnesty cover.

Now the government wants the Inland Revenue to collects Rs.

2.5 billion - half of the Rs 5 billion GST that is due - by end of this year.

“I have been given three months, from October to December, to collect Rs 2.

5 billion and I have set up a separate section to work on this now,” said Wijepala.

The Inland Revenue says it will provide penalty concessions to those that pay up by December 31 to make it easier.
