Visiting US military leaders say Sri Lanka is well on the road to recovery and that its troops may not be needed much longer as the immediate the relief phase ends.
“Sri Lanka is very much in the recovery stage of its operations and they are very much helping themselves,” UD Deputy Secretary of Defence, Paul Wolfowitz said in Colombo.
Bulk of the US troops on the ground in this region, are being pulled back within two weeks, with Indonesia setting a March 26 deadline to regain control of operations from foreign military and international organizations.
“In an emergency, the military is the only organisation that can put together a team quickly and move on the ground really fast to save lives early on in a disaster.
This isn’t intrinsically that kind of work,” Wolfowitz said.
“You really don’t need a US marine to be building a school or even the Sri Lankan Army to be building a road.
