Sri Lanka US$7.8mn resort opens

Jan 20, 2014 (LBO) - A 96-room hotel built with an investment of 7.8 million US dollars has opened in Sigiriya in central Sri Lanka. The Aliya (elephant in Sinhalese language) Resort & Spa, is constructed on a 22-acre area to blend with villages in the area, Sri Lanka's economic development ministry said after minister Basil Rajapaksa formally opened the hotel.

It has an elephant study centre and paddy museum in addition to a conference hall and restaurants.

It is within sight of Sigiriya rock jutting out of a large plain with ruins of man-made structures described either as a rock fortress or a Mahayana Bhuddist temple by historians.

Sri Lanka has seen a rise in tourism arrivals since the end of a war, and authorities have reported 1.27 million tourists for 2014 after a data revision suddenly increased in December.
