Sri Lanka’s Hamilton Canal reconstruction in progress

Apr 23, 2013 (LBO) - Rebuilding and clearing of Sri Lanka's Hamilton Canal in Negambo is progressing with a bridge at Palliyawatta to improve the environment for residents and to attract tourists the economic development ministry said.

A project by the Western Province Tourism Ministry and Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority expects to re-build a 22 kilometres canalas from Ma Oya to the mouth of the Kelani River.

With a nine kilometre stretch already completed, work on a second 14 kilometre stretch is now progressing.

"For a long time the natural environment and the health of residents in the vicinity of Hamilton Canal were seriously affected by waste from nearby houses and animal farms in the area," the economic development ministry said.

"As a result the new project has drawn the wholehearted supported support of the community.
