Sri Lanka tour firm moves to SUVs

July 28, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's Walkers Tours, a tour operator of the John Keells Holdings group said it had added a fleet of sports utility vehicles which will allow tourists to explore remote attractions.

"[T]he ultimate objective of this scheme is to benchmark our service levels against the best in the region," JKH inbound sector chief Vasantha Leelananda said in a statement.

"Walkers Tours’ pioneering role will assist us to attain excellence in the region."

Walkers Tours and Whittalls Travels, another JKH unit had started the plan in early 2004 helping their best and most dedicated chauffeur guides to acquire their own cars.

Now the firm had 106 Nissan Bluebird Sylphy cars owned by their drivers under the scheme. Sixteen Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles had been added to the fleet which the firm says will make it easier for tourists to explore newly opened areas in the North and East.

Walkers Tours said the fleet was owned by their own chauffeur guides who were assisted with a 5-year financing facility to buy the vehicles.

The program helps create small entrepreneurs and also upgrade the service to clients, the firm said.
