Luxury resort and spa chain Banyan Tree shelves plans for Sri Lanka

SINGAPORE, September 20 (LBO) –Singapore-based luxury resort and spa chain Banyan Tree has shelved plans for Sri Lanka, as the leisure industry takes a beating amidst an upsurge in violence.

The luxury leisure operator recently opened a spa at Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo, besides a managing the Deer Park Hotel in Giritale under its ˜Colours of Angsana’ brand.

We also bought the Beruwela Walk Inn from the John Keells Group few years back to develop. But that wont happen now, because country situation is not very good for tourists to visit, they are not at peace to enjoy a holiday, Executive Chairman Ho Kwon Ping told LBO.

The Banyan Tree chain is famous for its Asian garden-themed spas and resort villas with their own pools, a successful formula that has inspired several rival outfits.

The group’s plans to build a hotel in Sri Lanka were cut short in 1993, when President Ranasinghe Premadasa was assassinated.
