The duty leave however does not apply to eight locally manufactured products.

"The duty waiver applies to all items except cement, wires and cables, TOR steel, granite, wall tiles, floor tiles, paint and PVC products," said Michael.

Excluding the above eight items the local hotel trade can claim duty removal on all other equipment and material imports for reconstruction.

To get the duty break, hotels must fill in an application form at the Sri Lanka Tourist Board and submit a list of import items.

Hotels must also sign an MOU with the Tourist Board agreeing to improve its quality standards.
