The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce is lobbying the Treasury to be included in a list of agencies allowed to bring in duty free relief shipments to help tsunami victims.
The top private sector trade chamber has asked its members to adopt refugee camps that have sprung up in affected coastal districts, with some voluntarily coming forward.
The concession will help relief efforts by private sector firms in providing immediate relief supplies, including shipments from principals abroad.
“We have written to Mano Tittawella to be included in that list, and we expect a favourable response,” Secretary General of the CCC, Prema Cooray said Friday.
Presidential Advisor, Mano Tittawella also heads the government’s Strategic Enterprise Management Agency (SEMA) and a taskforce set up to re-build affected areas.
The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce already has about 30 tonnes of relief supplies pledged to it from international aid organisations and individuals.
