A flock of avid bird lovers in Sri Lanka is busting its feathers in a bid to map Sri Lanka’s bird colonies and preserve its assorted bird life.
The Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka (FOGSL) this week kicked off the second leg of a two phase programme to identify local and migrant bird species and their habitats.
“We have only put in a scientific methodology to a common man’s hobby,” said Professor Sarath Kotagama of FOG, at the launch of the second phase.
The project will continue until 2007 and also produce a national directory on Sri Lankan bird life, so taking a closer look at those birds will be that much easier.
The first phase took place from 2000 to 2002 and helped identify several sites as Important Bird Areas (IBA).
An Important Bird Area is a site that has been identified and documented as vital for the long-term conservation of certain birds.
