The three women were shot dead in the Jaffna peninsula from where hundreds of families linked to the guerrillas have fled, fearing reprisals in the wake of growing ethnic violence.

"An incident involving the killing of three civilians had been reported and we are awaiting details," a military official in Colombo said.

The pro-rebel Tamilnet website said two other family members escaped with injuries.

The victims are known as a "maaveerar" or a family which has had at least one member killed while serving with Tamil Tiger rebels.

One of the women killed on Sunday night had acted as the main character in the Tamil film "Amma," or mother, produced by the film division of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Tamilnet reported.
