Sri Lanka’s main political opposition, the UNP is claiming political victimisation of UNP supporters after Presidential elections. The UNP told journalists on Thursday that hundreds of UNP supporters in state institutions - mainly the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and the Central Transport Board -are being harassed by government backers.

UNP supporters are not allowed to come to work and are even subjected to physical harassments, said Deputy Secretary of the UNP, Tissa Attanayake.

The UNP claims President Mahinda Rajapakse was notified about the harassment but that no action was taken so far to control its spread.

The UNP also claims that names of 400,000 registered voters were deleted from the voting lists for no reason during last week’s Presidential election.

Another 700,000 voters in the Northern and Eastern parts of the island, says the UNP, were deprived of their right to vote by the LTTE.
