Sri Lanka's Tiger rebels will allow minority Tamils to vote in next week's presidential election, the guerrillas' proxies in parliament said Thursday. The Tamil vote could decide the winner in the closely-contested November 17 vote.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) met earlier in the day with 22 legislators who are guerrilla proxies in the national parliament to discuss their stand on the election.
R. Sampanthan, head of the Tiger proxy Tamil National Alliance, said the LTTE would not interfere with the electoral process and neither encourage or discourage people to vote.
"Tamil people have decided that they have nothing to gain from the presidential election," Sampanthan said in a statement after meeting the Tiger leadership in the rebel-held town of Kilinochchi.
