Early Warning

Dec 18, 2009 (LBO) – Sri Lanka got a 24.9 million Euro loan from Rabobank of the Netherlands for the second phase of an upgrade to its existing disaster response network, a Finance Ministry statement said. Over 35,000 people were killed in Sri Lanka by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami when the island did not have an early warning system.

It said Rabobank has already provided a loan of 41.4 million Euro for the first phase of the project of which 10.6 million Euros was financed out of a Dutch Government grant.

Under phase two of the loan, 18 fire stations built under phase one will be upgraded with additional equipment.

Also, 25 early warning towers, 15 disaster management coordinating units, a disaster management coordination and operation centre and communications systems are to be built under the second phase upgrade.
