Sept 27, 2007 (LBO) – Sri Lanka and Australia are tying up to start professional courses for customs men in the island and the South Asian region, officials said. Sri Lanka's Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) and the University of Jayawardenepura is linking with the Centre for Customs and Excise Studies (CCES) at the Canberra University to offer the programs.

This program will help practitioners become professionals, PIM chief Uditha Liyanage director PIM said.

Practitioners, Liyanage says, are people who collect experience over the years. A professional is able to draw information from the vast body of knowledge and mix with theoretical knowledge and personal experience.

The courses provide management training and education to customs officials.

PIM together with CCES have developed the curriculum to cover public sector and customs specific objects.

The study courses on offer will lead to an advanced certificate, postgraduate diploma and a masters program in customs administration.

PIM will commence programs next January.
