July 11, 2007 (LBO) – A Sri Lankan clothing technology school is launching a degree course in fashion and merchandising in a tie-up with Australia's Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), and is also planning to offer a Masters program from next year. The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, began in 1887 as the ˜Working Men™s College™ in Melbourne and today has some 57,000 students in Australia and elsewhere.

The course conducted with the School of Fashion and Textiles of the RMIT starting in November, will lead to a degree in fashion and merchandising, and open up new opportunities for professional qualifications for those in the apparel industry, The Brandix College of Clothing Technology (BCCT) said in a statement Tuesday.

The college is also negotiating to offer a MSc. course of RMIT in Sri Lanka, possibly by July 2008, the statement said.

BCCT currently offers a degree programme in textile technology from RMIT University, in addition to the vocational training courses it offers to those working in the Brandix Group, Sri Lanka™s largest apparel exporter.

This three-year full time study course, conducted in collaboration with the RMIT, leads to a Bachelor of Applied Science degree.
