Nov 13, 2006 (LBO) – Increasingly wealthy countries tend to have better access to water and sanitation, but some countries like Sri Lanka do far better despite lower incomes, a new report on human development, shows. This is well below Australia ranked number one with 113.2 percent but close to Niger ranked last at 172 with 21.5 percent. Access to clean water has emerged as the single biggest issue facing people as they progress towards achieving development goals, the new United Nations Human Development Report for 2006, shows.

On average, increasing wealth tends to bring improved access to water and sanitation, the report says but some less developed countries such as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh do better in water and sanitation, despite their incomes.
