Landmine ban advocacy groups have said claims of shifting landmines are exaggerated, with the tsunami uprooting just about ten of the explosive devices in all un-cleared areas.
The past two weeks since tidal waves hammered Sri Lanka’s coastline, have been rife with fears that landmines in un-cleared areas have been uprooted and scattered.

“Only about ten to 15 mines have shifted from original minefields based on assessments that we have done. All claims that mines shifting are posing a danger are baseless,” Dr.
Kunasingham, Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Relief and Rehabilitation, said.
A spokesperson for the Landmine Ban Advocacy Forum said that most reports have been exaggerated, with only few moving and even that within known and demarcated danger zones.
“The geographic areas have also changed, some landmarks have shifted, washed away or damaged and those need to be replaced, but the threat has not increased and is not much more than existed before the tidal wave,” he said.
