They should be gazetted and enforced by end of this month," said C K Shanmugarajah, Secretary, Food Advisory Committee (FAC), Ministry of Health, on Thursday.

The stricter food labelling laws were postponed twice last year, to accommodate requests for time by manufacturers and importers of food items.

The main concern was the need to include more information in the labels.

Under the new standards the name of the product must be displayed in at least two out of the three local languages and listing of ingredients is made compulsory.

Local traders clamed they could not stick to the new information requirements as they had already printed millions of rupees worth of labels and packages.

But this time the FAC says local businesses are willing to support the higher standards for labelling food
