Jan 23 (LBO) -Nurses in Sri Lanka’s public health service are threatening trade union action, over a salary increase anomaly. Nurses’ trade unions in government hospitals say salary increases for nurses are well below increase given to staff in other government services.
Budgeted salary increases for the public sector was announced on January 12, through a government circular.

5 percent, police by 15 percent, teachers by 20 percent, accountants by 65 percent and so on,” said President, Government Nursing Officers Association, Saman Ratnapriya.
The unions also want nursing re-established as a separate profession for salary increases and other administrative matters - the current circular lists nursing as a sub-section of other medical services.
