Sri Lanka brings out national action plan to get in on the US$ 2 trillion global trade in services. Services account for well over half of Sri Lanka’s GDP but local systems are yet to wake up to service exports as exportables in their own right.
Now the Export Development Board (EDB) – the main State body involved in export promotion and development - says it will start a programme to increase exports of professional services in five selected categories.

“Initially we will target professional services in accountancy, law, construction and related services, IT and ayurveda,” said Chairman EDB, Brian Angunawela at the launch of the National Market Strategy to Promote Exports of Professional Services, on Wednesday.
The three year national strategy will target service markets in the UK and United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The EDB is now looking for foreign funding to set up a dedicated service export unit that will focus on pushing the selected services into the two target markets.
