The Urban Development Authority (UDA) says some 50 acres of water front property in Colombo will be released for commercial use by 2006 under the second phase of the Beira Lake restoration project. UDA officials told Lanka Business Online on Wednesday that some 1000 unauthorized structures, mostly low income households around the Beira Lake would be moved to a proposed housing complex in Dematagoda, freeing the land around the canal.

The Beira Lake remains one of the most distinctive landmarks of Colombo and a key historic relic from its colonial past.
