Out of the 48,108 vacancies in its database, JobsNet has managed to fit in around 3,000 people into private sector slots over one and a half year – and this from among 83,495 employment seekers.
JobsNet is Sri Lanka’s second attempt at sorting out the mismatch in demand and supply in the local labour market, but like the previous attempt in 1996, has run into the same invisible barriers.
This is because employment brokering in Sri Lanka is as delicate a matter as marriage brokering since very often the deciding factor is social standing and nothing else.
