Jan 10, 2013 (LBO) - The Employers' Federation of Ceylon a grouping of large firms has called for rule of law to be respected ahead of an expected impeachment of the chief justice by parliament which has been declared illegal and unconstitutional by courts.

The EFC, an 83 year old body said the sovereignty of the people must be respected.

The EFC said the executive, the legislature and judiciary must respect each other in the exercise of its functions.


"One attempting to usurp the power of the other is a direct affront to the rule of law in any country," the EFC said.


"The people in our country, notwithstanding this crisis have continued to respect the rule of law. Any action or conduct that demonstrates otherwise could threaten the very existence of law and order in our country.

"Therefore, we earnestly urge the Government, all Opposition political parties and all other stake holders and organizations which are genuinely concerned with best interest of Sri Lanka and its people, to extricate themselves from petty differences, and jointly safeguard the rule of law in our land.
