Nov 01, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lanka has begun a process to impeach chief justice Shirani Bandaranayake with a motion signed by with 117 legislators representing the ruling coalition, information minister Keheliya Rambukwelle said.







Rambukwelle said the harmony between the parliament and judiciary had been disturbed with the judiciary overstepping its role, which has prompted the impeachment motion.

He said the next step will be either a debate on the issue or the appointment of a select committee to go into the issue.

Minister Rambukwelle said the impeachment was in line with the provisions of Sri Lanka's constitution.

He did not reveal the exact charges against the Chief Justice saying the speaker has to first go into the motion.

The impeachment followed a speech by Sri Lanka's speaker outlining the supremacy of the parliament, Ramukwelle said.

Sri Lanka's ruling coalition has a two thirds majority in the parliament, though analysts say a simple majority is sufficient to carry through an impeachment.
