April 03, 2007 (LBO) – Sri Lanka needs to master trade law to take the best advantage of international trade, Chief Justice Sarath Silva said Tuesday at the announcing of an international trade law conference to be held in Sri Lanka. But Third World countries maintain they need to protect crucial sectors of their economies like agriculture. They want advanced economies to remove existing protectionist measures first and give more access to exports from the Third World.

The International Trade Law conference, organized by the Law College, will focus on the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Doha development agenda and the future of the multilateral trading system.

The Law College hopes the forum, to be held during July 30-August 1, will be helpful to the business community, policymakers and groups focusing on economic activities in Sri Lanka.
