Sri Lanka state has been given 90 days to respond to a landmark decision by the United Nations Human Rights Committee. The decision has opened the way for victims of human rights violations to go beyond the Sri Lankan legal system.

The committee held that the Sri Lankan state had violated the rights of Ravaya Editor Victor Ivan, and that he should be compensated.

Ivan appealed to the UN body after the Supreme Court denied him leave to proceed in this country.

"As far as human rights is concerned if you can’t obtain redress within the legal framework of this country there is another forum elsewhere.
