July 9, 2008 (LBO) – Sri Lanka Telecom, the island's largest fixed access operator, has established a separate unit for director publishing information-based businesses, officials said. Although a non-core business activity, SLT Publications was formed as a separate entity to gain operational advantages and productivity gains, Leisha de Silva Chandrasena, chairperson of SLT told reporters.

"SLT's management has reviewed its business activities with a view to making them efficient, productive, profitable and customer-focused and hence decided to incorporate the subsidiary companies¦" Chandrasena said Wednesday.

SLT Publications will also enter into information-based diversified businesses such as direct mailing services, web-based businesses and data printing.

The new subsidiary, formed with an investment of 50 million rupees, will handle SLT's telecom directory service known as the 'Rainbow Pages'.

Rainbow pages have now been modified to carry any phone number from any service provider, for a small fee, at the request of the customer, said Ruwan Wijetunga, deputy general manager, SLT Publications.
