May 30, 2008 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's wireless operator Lanka Bell has launched wireless broadband services offering hi-speed internet connectivity for home and enterprise users, the company said. "For home users it could be a great aid to education and social interaction."

Lanka Bell says it has a subscriber base of nearly one million. The company was established in 1997 with an initial investment of 150 million dollars. Lanka Bell's WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) connectivity offers speeds up to 10 Megabits per second.

"The launch of Bell Broadband represents an important milestone in the evolution of Lanka Bell as a total solutions provider to enterprise and residential users," Prasad Samarasinghe managing director of Lanka Bell said in a statement.

The standard Bell Broadband has a connection fee 10,000 rupees for all user categories. Residential are offered unlimited downloads for 2,000 rupees a month at speeds up to 512 kilobits per second.

Office users are offered the 3,000 package with speeds of one megabit per second and 5,500 rupee with two megabits per second.
