Jan 08, 2007 (LBO) – Sri Lanka Telecom trade unions including non executive technical staff are threatening to go on strike next week, if the telecom giant fails to sort out salary anomalies, promotions and restrict short-term contracts.

The union official says the company had not yet granted 17.5 percent, 20.0 percent or 25.0 percent salary increase that was promised from January.

"Nearly 6,000 out of 7,000 Telecom staff is non executive and their basic salary starts at 14,000 rupees minimum," Anura Perera, President of the Sri Lanka Telecom Workers Union told journalists on Monday.

Perera says except engineering executive staff even the non executive technical staff will walk out on January 10. He said teams have been assigned to cover essential services in the event of a breakdown.

Unions say non executive increases have not been granted as promised but claim that executive grades have already got increases of as much as 50 percent.

"We request the (Sri Lanka) Telecom management to grant us the fair promotions scheme that was agreed with the secretary of the labour ministry," Perera said.

Perera says hiring staff on temporary basis or on short term contracts, must be stopped.
