July 29, 2006 (LBO) – Sales of locally assembled computers rose 20 percent to 11,202 units for the three months to March, though established brands continued to increase their presence in Sri Lanka, an industry report said Saturday. Locally assembled brands such as Panora and Kobian dominate the desktop market, with the latter launching a new series of notebooks.

Sri Lanka's personal computer/server market has grown 19.3 percent to 56,011 from Jan-Mar, over the corresponding period 2005, despite fears of the island slipping back to war, as Tamil Tiger rebels step up attacks against military targets.

Springboard Research, which carried out this study, says Sri Lanka's IT spend slowed down during the last quarter of 2005 due to the presidential elections.

But public sector spending, has since picked up, commanding 22.2 percent of computer sales made during the first quarter of this year.

IT is gaining prominence in the public sector and the government seems to be putting serious efforts in the growth of the sector. In addition, private sector has also started investing in strengthening their IT infrastructure.
