Last Resort

June 9, 2006 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's CBNSat a local cable television operator -- is appealing to customers to be patient while they engage in a court battle aimed at re-starting operations. Sleuths from the criminal investigation department switched off the equipment at CBNSat's affiliate company SonicNet technology, bringing its activities to a halt.

The company had also asked the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) to hold an inquiry and allow its operations to continue, and to restore its services pending a final decision, Chief Executive Muhunthan Canagey told journalists Friday.

CBNSat is alleging that police action to shut down its operations last Tuesday were unlawful.

Though police had a search warrant issued by a magistrate, the company alleges that the warrant did not permit sleuths from the Criminal Investigation Department to switch off equipment.

A technical report by Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation technicians is due to be filed in court on Monday, until which time court has allowed the equipment to remain switched off.
