Feb 23 (LBO) – Dialog Telekom, a unit of Telekom Malaysia Bhd said Thursday it is splurging US$150 million to expand its network by over 50 percent this year.

Part of the funds will be channelled to a proposed 3G (third generation) network, build a fibre optic infrastructure and offer broadband services to customers.

œWe want to link our base stations through a fibre optic link. The project is starting shortly to lay around 200 kilometres of fibre, Hans Wijeyasuriya, Dialog's CEO told reporters.

Though 3G services are still in its testing stage, Dialog is expanding it to the north and eastern parts of Colombo this year.

With a subscriber base of over two million customers, currently accounting for 70 percent of total cellular market share, Dialog plans to extend its network of 600 base stations to around 1000 later this year.

Earlier Thursday, Dialog said that net profits for 2005 jumped 71 percent on-year to Rs. 7.01 billion, surpassing their own forecast of around Rs6.24 billion made last year.
