rnEarlier this year, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) announced plans to issue international voice licences. rn

rnA number of companies were reported to have expressed interest including the wireless local loop operators (Suntel and Lankabell) and other communication consortiums. rn

rnOfficials said multiple licences are on the cards, which will allow operators to offer international voice connections through any technology they choose and at lower call tariffs. rn

rnMeanwhile, ratification of the Telecom Policy is expected to precede the issue of international voice licences. Officials said a number of amendments were being included to the draft policy to accommodate suggestions by the public and the industry.
