Sri Lanka replants damaged coral

May 07, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's Commercial Bank said it is helping wildlife authorities replant coral in a marine park in the South West of the island which has been damaged over the last 15 years. Sri Lanka's Department of Wildlife plans to replant 1,000 square feet of coral in Wadduwa which is part of the Hikkaduwa Marine National Park using techniques developed in the Philippines.

Jegan Durairatnam, commercial bank's chief operating officer said in a statement that replanting will help restore the beauty of the Hikkaduwa coral reef which is a major tourist attraction.

He hoped the bank's social project will encourage more such initiatives.

The corals had been damaged in 1998, during a so-called 'El Nino' sea warming event and in a tsunami in 2004.

Conservationists will produce one square foot concrete block with dead coral of five to six inches embedded in them.

The blocks will then be linked and laid on the seabed like floor tiles and allow to be 'cured' by natural seawater.
