Sri Lanka to upgrade military capability with Russian credit: report

Feb 07, 2010 (LBO) - A 300 million US dollar credit line to be wrapped up during an official visit by Sri Lanka's President Mahindra Rajapaksa to Russia, would modernise Sri Lanka's military capability, a media report said. The Sunday Times newspaper said Moscow had offered to repair or replace all Russian origin military equipment that is now damaged or unusable as part of the deal.

"They include assault rifles, armoured personnel carriers, fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters," the newspaper said.

"The only condition is that such equipment has been originally purchased from Russian agencies.

President Rajapaksa left for Russia last Friday. The newspaper said the visit was planned from last October when Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov came to Sri Lanka. Russia's RIA Novosti news agency said a 300 million US dollar deal to "buy armaments and dual purpose products" will be signed during President Rajapaksa's February 6-8 visit.
