Emirates says losing US$10mn a day, 20-pct of fleet grounded

Apr 19, 2010 (LBO) - Dubai-based Emirates airlines said flight disruptions to Europe had cost it 50 million US dollars and it was losing revenues from 18,000 passengers a day following volcanic ash spewed out of Iceland. "The scale of this crisis is unlike anything I have experienced in my career.


The longer it continues, the more complex the recovery process becomes," Emirates president Tim Clark said in a statement.

"Like every carrier operating to Europe, Emirates is facing huge losses 10 million dollars a day in our case."

Emirates said it was providing accommodation to all passengers who were in transit in Dubai were given accommodation. It was providing meals and accommodation to 6,000 passengers at cost of one million US dollars a day.

Until yesterday, over 80,000 passengers have been hit by the disruption.
