Sri Lanka energy, transportation projects draw US firms

Mar 28, 2012 (LBO) - The United States is keen to expand trade and investment in Sri Lanka, a senior official said at talks on a proposed bilateral Trade and Investment Framework Agreement between the two countries. Her remarks came in the wake of a US-sponsored resolution adopted by the United Nation Human Rights Council urging Sri Lanka to probe alleged war crimes in its 30-year ethnic war that ended in 2009, which the island fiercely resisted. Top US companies are bidding for key projects to support Sri Lankan energy and transportation needs, said Valerie Fowler, US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires.

The US also recently eased restrictions on defense sales to Sri Lanka to allow exports of equipment for aerial and maritime surveillance to Sri Lanka's navy and coast guard, she said.
