Sri Lanka to rebuild fishery harbours in war-torn north

Sept 16, 2010 (LBO) - Sri Lanka will rebuild two fishery harbours in the north of the island as part of a strategy to develop maritime resources in the region which is recovering from a war, a government minister said. "This is a clear indication of the governments vision in moving forward in the development phase," information minister and cabinet spokesman Keheliya Rambukwelle said.

"Both agriculture and fisheries were marred by terrorist activity. Therefore supplies and production was low. Now we are able to move forward.

A 30-year war in the north and the east of Sri Lanka ended in May 2009.

Rambukwelle said fishery harbours in Silavathurai in Mannar in the northwest coast of the island and Gurunagar in Jaffna would be rebuilt under a fisheries ministry plan approved by the cabinet of ministers.

A fishery harbour in Gandara in Matara in the south of the island would also be rehabilitated.
