India sends back New York rubbish

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM,, India, Oct 19, 2007 (AFP) - India's communist-ruled Kerala state has ordered containers of illegal rubbish shipped in from New York to be sent back, a minister said Friday. The containers were supposed to hold only "raw materials" meaning waste paper under a deal between paper manufacturing company Kochin Kadlas and New York Municipality.

But Kerala health minister P.K. Sreemathy told AFP three containers held rotting food and plastic when they arrived the state's Kochi port.

"How can we allow our state to be made a dumping ground for the US?" she asked.

A notice would be issued against the Kochi-based firm for shipping the "prohibited waste materials" from New York.

"The state Pollution Control Board experts who inspected the containers found that three containers of 60 tons (of) waste imported from New York contain plastic waste, biodegradable food waste, glass pieces and packing material of computer accessories mixed in the waste paper consignment," the minister said.

"I've directed the customs authorities to send back the shipment to the original destination immediately as it contains prohibited waste materials," she said.
