The series is tied at 1-1, with Sri Lanka winning the opening Test by an innings and 239 runs and India clinching a 170-run victory in the second match.

The off-spinner dismissed well-set Chaminda Vaas and in-form skipper Mahela Jayawardene in the afternoon session before the hosts reached 175-4 in their first innings at tea in reply to the tourists' 249.

Kumar Sangakkara kept the Indian attack at bay with a responsible 72 not out on a slow turning track. Thilan Samaraweera was unbeaten on 21 at the break.

Left-handed Sangakkara put on 95 for the third wicket with nightwatchman Vaas (47) to prop up the innings after the fall of overnight batsman Michael Vandort (14) in the morning session.

Sangakkara looked comfortable against both pace and spin, having so far hit nine fours in his 27th Test half-century.
