England slow Sri Lanka’s progress in second Test

Dec 12, 2007 (AFP) - Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene missed a double century by five runs as England fought back on the fourth morning of the second Test here on Wednesday. Sri Lanka, replying to England's first innings total of 351, crashed from their overnight score of 379-4 to 439-7 by lunch, a lead of 88 runs with three wickets in hand.

Wicket-keeper Prasanna Jayawardene was unbeaten on 18 at the break, while Lasith Malinga had yet to score.

England, who struggled to take two wickets during the entire third day's play, grabbed three wickets in the space of 26 runs in Wednesday's morning session.

Mahela Jayawardene fell for 195, agonisingly close to his fourth double hundred in 20 three-figure knocks. He hit 16 boundaries and a six.

Sri Lanka added 20 runs to their overnight total when Jehan Mubarak fended at a short ball from Steve Harmison and gave Ian Bell an easy catch at gully.
