Oct 19, 2007 (LBO) – Sri Lankan schoolboy cricketer Angelo Matthews, named the island's best player in the 2006 under 19's world cup, has won the 2006 Prince of Wales trophy, British High Commissioner, Dominick Chilcott announced Friday. Matthews of St Joseph’s College, Colombo, has been a regular member of the Sri Lanka under 19's team since 2003 and captained the side during their tour of England in 2005.

The trophy is awarded annually to the most successful schoolboy cricketer of the previous year.

It was first awarded after the 1998 visit to Sri Lanka by HRH The Prince of Wales, to commemorate his visit and Sri Lanka’s 50th Anniversary of Independence.

Chilcott said at the award ceremony, held at Westminster House, that Matthews was also a formidable bowler.

"He is clearly going places and before long will be a household name throughout the cricketing world."
