A protest erupted outside the Trincomalee Naval Base as reports have said that former prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and some of his family members have sought refuge in the base following anti-government clashes on Monday.
The group is demanding the former prime minister and his family be held accountable for the crisis and be arrested.
Crowds besieged his residence and tried to storm it and he was evacuated to safety in a pre-dawn operation amid tear gas and warning shots.
So far seven people have died and close to 200 have been reported to be injured since Monday.
An island-wide curfew has been extended to Wednesday morning as authorities seek to stop the violence.
However, many protesters are still calling for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa also to leave office.
Reports say more than 50 houses of politicians were burned overnight.
