Sri Lanka invited to invest in textiles in Uganda, funds training centre

May 13, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka has been invited to invest in textile plants in Uganda an exporter of cotton, where the companies from the island are already building mini hydro plants, during a state visit by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.



Talks with Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni had focused on agriculture, energy and trade, Sri Lanka's president office said in a statement.

He had requested Sri Lanka help build Uganda's textile sector, where only 5.0 percent of the country's cotton production was used domestically.

Sri Lankan companies had built 6.

6 MegaWatts of mini-hydro plants in the country. Ugandan officials were quoted as saying that Sri Lankan firms had worked in difficult terrain and completed the plants within budget.

There were opportunities in Uganda, for oil refining, pipeline construction, storage and waste management.

Sri Lanka is to provide 1.5 million US dollars to upgrade Masulita Vocational Training Center, which President Rajapaksa is due to visit.

Uganda is one of several countries that opposed a US sponsored United Nations human rights resolution on Sri Lanka.
