Sri Lanka president to take oaths Feb 04: report

Jan 31, 2010 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's re-elected president Mahinda Rajapaksa will take oaths for his second term in Kandy when the country celebrates independence from British rule on February 04, a media report said. The Sunday Times newspaper quoting foreign employment minister Keheliya Rambukwella said president Rajapaksa has spoken of his decision at a meeting with chief priests of the island's main Buddhist chapters in Kandy on Saturday.

The president had told mediamen Thursday that he would consult the Supreme Court on whether he could take oaths on November 2011 when his first term ends.

The newspaper also said parliament would be dissolved on Friday February 05.

Parliamentary polls could be held after four weeks from the event with expectations that polls may be held in April.

Parliament however could sit in emergency sessions when summoned, the report said.

A report on Friday quoted a partner of the ruling coalition as saying that an attempt would be made to win over 19 opposition members to notch up a two-thirds majority in parliament.
